Bow

The dog lowers his front legs, while his hindquarters remain straight. The bow precedes a leap forward or to the side. The front legs may be held wide open, and the bow may precede a leap forward with front paws held wide open, or an attack from a frontal position. (Goodman, 2002; Capra, 2010).

In this interaction between two males, the Boxer exhibits a stare and the Cane Corso responds with a bow, ready to leap forward to displace his opponent.

The female Alaskan Malamute approaches the male mixed breed at a run, hackles raised. When the male moves nearer, the Malamute bows, then swerves to the side, moving away with tail first lowered, then between her legs. When she moves closer from a frontal stance, the male exhibits a bow, then leaps forward with legs/paws wide open. The Malamute licks her nose, then leaps forward with legs/paws held wide open. She then takes a defensive posture, wrinkling her nose with an agonistic facial display, and the male again bows. Both dogs then bow, with the female then exhibiting an agonistic pucker and flicking her tongue, the male growl-barking. The Malamute displaces the male, exhibiting an agonistic pucker, with her tail between her legs, and sneezes. When the mixed breed male exhibits a growl-bark with defensive threatening, the female moves away at a run.
