Crouching

A posture which makes the dog appear to be smaller and slouched. The dog's legs are bent, and its back is usually arched; its tail is held low or between the legs, its ears bent back.

The young female White Swiss Shepherd is crouching down to the point of lying on the ground, in response to the approach of the Malamute.

In response to the approach of a female Giant Schnauzer, the Maremmano Abruzzese x Belgian Shepherd cross crouches down.

The female Staffordshire Bull Terrier exhibits T position towards a female German Shepherd. The Shepherd exhibits active submission towards the Cattledog. The Staffy sniffs the anal-genital area of the adolescent dog. The Cattledog runs away, chased by the Shepherd. The Staffy stands still as she is sniffed by the Golden Retriever, then runs toward the female Shepherd, cutting across her path. The Shepherd reacts by crouching.

Video filmed during a Utility Dog trial. The dog's handler puts the dog into a down-stay during the heeling exercise. The dog reacts by crouching, closing his eyes, lowering his head and forelegs and bending his ears back. When his handler moves away, the dog raises his head, lowers his hindquarters to the ground, lies down, licks his nose, then looks toward the gate, ears turned sideways.
