Occupying the perimeter
The dog moves away from the other individuals present,
and stays at a distance greater than the average
distance between the different members of the group.
When the dog is in a fenced area, it may spend a
considerable amount of time on the perimeter of the area
near the fence.

on the left has moved away from the group.
The two males in the foreground (a
German Shepherd and a German Shepherd mix) are facing
off. In the background a female Berger Blanc Suisse is
occupying the perimeter.

The male Dachshund has just entered the fenced training
field in which there are several unfamiliar dogs. He
observes the other dogs and seeks support from his
owner. He then shakes off and moves toward the fence. He
marks with urine, observes the other dogs, then moves
toward his owner and looks at her, walking along and occupying
the perimeter . He marks with urine, and the
female black-and-white mixed breed moves closer with an
indirect approach, then moves away, followed by the
Dachshund. The male uses an indirect approach toward the
male Golden Retriever; when the Golden Retriever orients
toward him, the Dachshund swerves to the side and moves
away. The Dachshund sits down during the encounter, tail
lowered. The two dogs sniff each other, and the
Dachshund again sits down when the Golden Retriever
exhibits anal-genital olfactory exploration. The Golden
Retriever stands still during anal-genital olfactory
exploration by the Dachshund, then moves away, followed
for a few meters by the Dachshund. The Golden Retriever
stops near his owner, and the Dachshund stops a few
yards away. Followed by the Dachshund, the Golden
Retriever approaches the Dachshund's owner, sniffing
her. The Golden Retriever displaces the Dachshund, who
seeks support from his owner. The Dachshund marks and
returns to occupy the
perimeter. The Dachshund walks along the outer
perimeter of the social group and marks with urine.

The female Airedale and her owner are occupying
the perimeter in a fenced training field in
which there are several dogs and people. The Airedale
eats grass; the female Jack Russel controls the area in
the center of the field (exhibiting a frontal stance and
standing tall). When the Jack Russel moves away, the
Airedale runs over to her owner. The Airedale then
approaches the social group, and the Jack Russel orients
and then walks toward the Airedale. The Airedale
continues eating grass, and the Jack Russel leaves the
interaction.
