Sniffing
The dog exhibits intense sniffing of the ground around
him for a moment or over a prolonged period of time.
(Murphy, 1998; Shilder, 2004;
Shoening, 2006)

This male Golden Retriever has
approached the mixed breed bitch, who has lowered her
head, sniffing, and is glancing at him.

The Terrier mix is sniffing, tail
lowered, ears back, averting his gaze to avoid eye
contact with the Alaskan Malamute bitch.

This video was filmed during a behavioural evaluation.
The Golden Retriever is a 7 year-old spayed female. The
Cocker Spaniel is a 2 year-old female. The two females
are both on leash, held by their owners, standing 3
meters from each other. The Cocker Spaniel exhibits a
frontal stance; when the Golden Retriever turns her head
toward the Cocker, the Spaniel turns and lowers her
head, sniffing. The
Cocker Spaniel then looks towards the window, sniffing
the air, then sniffing the
ground; when her owner shakes the leash, the
dog wags her tail, licks her lips with an open mouth
display, glances at her owner, then repositions herself
between the two owners, where she begins to bark at the
Golden Retriever.
