Sniffing own genitals

During an interaction, a dogs sniffs its own genital area. This behaviour can be observed in male dogs.

In this interaction between two males, the mixed breed approaches the Lagotto Romagnolo. The Lagotto first ignores him and sniffs the ground. When the mixed breed exhibits anal-genital olfactory exploration, the Lagotto turns, freezes, then again wags his tail. The two dogs face off briefly; the Lagotto then blocks the mixed breed from exhibiting olfactory exploration and leaves. The mixed breed sniffs his own anal-genital area. As the Lagotto leaves, the mixed breed seeks support from the people in his family.

Video clip filmed during a behavioural evalation. The male Berger Blanc Suisse exhibits lack of appetite and moves away from the food bowl during the test. His ears are turned sideways, his tail is between his legs and he is panting. He looks at the evaluator, then looks toward the exit and closes his eyes and sniffs his own genital area. When the evaluator moves closer, he licks his lips, and moves away to leave; when the artificial hand is placed near him, he threatens to bite and growl-barks.
