Yelping

Sound similar to that of a whine, but shorter and higher pitched.
(Fox, 1978; Murphy, 1998)

This Labrador x Husky cross puppy has reacted to the approach of the male German Shepherd mix by sitting, turning her head away and yelping.

A male German Shepherd approaches a female Czech Wolf Dog, who remains lying down. Walking stiffly, the male exhibits piloerection along his entire back, licks his flews, stops and stiffens. The Wolf Dog flicks her tongue and lowers her head. The male averts his gaze and closes his eyes; the female then stands up and exhibits anal-genital olfactory exploration with a rear approach, with ears turned sideways, one pinned back, and tail lowered. The female lifts a front paw, then lowers her tail still further. The male orients in a lateral stance, wagging his tail and standing tall. The female sniffs his muzzle, exhibits an agonistic pucker, and bows; when the male reacts, rearing up and exhibiting an agonistic pucker, she yelps and swerves to the side, fleeing. The male charges, and the female again attempts to flee; when the Shepherd slows, the Wolf Dog leaves, head and tail lowered, closing her eyes. The male moves away, as the female seeks support from her owner.
