Stiff high stance
The dog's entire body is held high, with legs straight
and stiff, muscles tense; the dog may be trembling and
may have hackles raised or show piloerection along the
back / tail.

The male Border Collie has reacted to
the testing behaviours exhibited by the male Terrier mix
with a stiff high stance, avoiding eye contact.

The male mixed breed male is exhibiting
a stiff high stance in this encounter with a female
Rhodesian Ridgeback. When the female swerves to the
side, he shifts his weight backwards but remains
immobile.

In this interaction between two males, the Border Collie
approaches the Golden Retriever. The Border Collie
exhibits a stiff high stance,
and piloerection along the withers, back and tail. The
Retriever averts his gaze and wags his tail; the Border
Collie in turn averts his gaze, trembling, and stands
still. When the Border Collie takes a single step
forward with one paw, the Golden Retriever glances at
him repeatedly, and the Border Collie averts his gaze,
shifting his weight backward.

The German Shepherd mix briefly greets a familiar
person, then orients toward the two female dogs in the
training field. He raises his head and tail, moving a
few steps closer to the grey mixed breed female. He then
startles when a young Segugio Italiano mix approaches.
He turns his ears sideways as he meets her, walking
stiffly and with a high stiff
stance. The mixed breed is holding her tail and
head low, and is showing piloerection (hackles raised)
along her withers. The two females sniff the male dog,
who displays piloerection along his entire back and
holds his tail high as he wags it. He then chases the
Segugio mix, who lowers her head and swerves to the
side. The grey mixed breed follows the male, who stops
and orients laterally in a high
stiff stance. The male leaves, followed by the
two females, then sniffs the tunnel without marking it,
walking with head down and tail up, then marks the
ground with urine. The grey female then marks over his
mark.
