Chin over

Positioning the chin or the neck over the neck, shoulders or back of another dog. When displayed over the neck, it may be associated with the raising of a foreleg (the beginning of a hug). May be exhibited during a confrontation. Chin over appears to be a way of evaluating the reaction of another dog to pressure on the back, for example, before mounting or in association with pressing down to the ground, or the exhibiting of a voluntary down by the recipient.

In this interaction between two females, the Alaskan Malamute exhibits an offensive facial display while following the Dalmatian, who seeks support from her owner. When the owner orients toward the Malamute, she moves away. The Dalmatian displays a rear approach, with anus-genital olfactory exploration; the Malamute turns and displays chin over while simultaneously raising her right foreleg. The Malamute decreases the pressure, and when the Dalmatian tries to leave the interaction, the Malamute again displays chin over, raising a front paw and pressing with her chest. The Dalmatian returns to her owner once again to seek support; when a Hovawart bitch belonging to the Dalmatian's family group approaches, the Malamute moves away.
