Shoulder-anus marking

Complex behaviour. The dog approaches another individual, then rubs his shoulder against its body, turns around and rubs his anus against the dog. The sequence may be repeated, and at the end of the sequence the dog may display olfactory exploration. The behaviour may be incomplete; in this case marking with the perianal area may be missing, or very brief.

The young male Labrador approaches the sitting Labrador bitch. The female averts her gaze, and the male stops, shakes off, and then displays shoulder-anus marking towards the female, glancing at her before moving away.

Video filmed during a behavioural evaluation. After physical contact, the male Pit Bull orients toward the person and exhibits shoulder-anus marking. After again making physical contact, he twice gives signs of exhibiting aggression towards the person's hand, and displays intense shoulder-anus marking, then leaps forward to attack the person filming the evaluation.
